HUMID AIR INJECTION (HAI)
for Gas Turbine Power Augmentation

Humid Air Injection (HAI) involves the injection of heated, moist air into the compressor discharge of a gas turbine engine.

GE7FA Performance at 95 F Inlet Temperature with Humid Air Injection

The HAI Technology has the Following Features:

·        The HAI Power Augmentation Increases Combustion Turbine Power by more than 30-Percent at a Fraction of New Combustion Turbine Cost

·        Incremental Heat Rate is Approximately 6,000 –6500 Btu/kWh

·        As Compared to a Combustion Turbine Reduces NOx Emissions by 15-Percent (Lbs./kWh) for DLN combustors and by over 50% for diffusion type combustors

·        The Incremental Power Introduced Practically Instantly and reaches its maximum within Approximately 20 Minutes

·        Incremental Costs are Approximately $160-180/kW

·        Given Peak Requirement is Met with Lower Installed ISO Combustion Turbine Capacity

·        Schedule for Introduction of New Capacity Reduced to 4-8 Months

·        Significantly Increases dispatch Hours

·        Provides Significant Capital and Operating Cost Savings Compared to Alternate Power Augmentation Methods

·        Provides Significant Flexibility and Leverage for Introduction of New Capacity

Off-The-Shelf Technology

  • Most gas turbines already have injection port at compressor discharge, this port can be used for air injection.
  • Auxiliary compressor is standard offering from Cooper Turbocompressor or Ingersoll Rand.
  • Once-Through-Partial-Staem-Generator has been installed at over 1200 sites by Struthers-Wells.
  • High blowdown (20%) from separator allows use of softened water; no need for demineralized water.
  • Calpine Corp. tested humid air injection on GE7FA engine at the Broad River plant in North Carolina. Only three months were required from contract signing to the performance of the tests. Test results confirm predicted power augmentation and heat rate improvement.
